EDIBLE DAY-OLD FLOWERS!

Instead of deadheading your day-lily (hemerocallis) plants and throwing the old blooms into the compost pile, why not eat them? They're delicious!

That's something I discovered this past summer. The spent day-old flowers have a sweet melon-like taste, especially the part closest to the stem. They could be added to salads or, I suppose, even sauteed! (Does Martha Stewart know?)

Of course, the whole hemerocallis plant at any time, including the roots, are perfectly edible.
